Social media is gaining acceptance among local governments as a valuable means of connecting with its residents. Many municipal officials are finding that communicating in this manner is a cost-effective way to reach citizens, many of whom have never before interacted with their city or town government. The benefits are vast: nearly free, easy to use, effective at spreading news beyond an initial audience — and it is where people already are. Municipalities use social media to promote upcoming community events; alert residents about city/town hall closures; provide updates on council meeting dates and times; inform about library services; and market for tourism. While most cities and towns have social media policies in place, some do not.
